It felt like a million hours had passed since I’d seen his face, although it had only been four. Because it was midnight when I was leaving Baisleigh’s House, I decided to call and hear his voice. I was tempted to get into my truck and drive to his house, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready for what came with that bold move.

Laike and I still had so much to figure out, and I was wondering if sex would interfere with that. The last thing I wanted was us to fall into the habit of sealing everything with a simple kiss. I wanted to work through our issues and grow even closer than we once were, but the more I thought about it, there weren’t any real issues.

Our breakup wasn’t one that was long overdue or happened because we were toxic. We were simply in over our heads, too young and too serious. Communication on Laike’s part would’ve been appreciated, but he was performing well in that area so far.

In conclusion, I knew that it was my insecurities that was stopping me from going full force in this thing this time around. Yes, I still loved Laike unconditionally, but I was still scorned. I was still wondering if I was enough. Still wondering if any of it was my fault. Still wondering if he’d do to me the same thing he’d already done.

I was still dragging around the pain although I hardly felt it anymore. The scars it left still lingered, and with him in my life again, they were reminding me constantly that they were still there and his presence was triggering.

“I promise. I’m leaving now. I got caught up like I always do and lost track of time. My intentions weren’t to leave after midnight.”

“You said that the last few nights,” he fussed. “Babe, that’s why you have staff. It’s not safe, neither is it okay for you to be working from morning to night.”

“I knooooooow, Laike. I’m working on hiring more staff to do the things that I don’t trust my current staff to. Well, not that I don’t trust them, but they’ve made it clear that they’re good at their jobs and not mine time and time again.”

“Aight. I’m going to be quiet so that you can pay attention to your surroundings. You walked outside, yet?”

“Walking out, now,” I confirmed.

“Put the phone in your pocket or something. Pay attention and make sure your hands are free.”

“Alright. One second. You’re going in my pocket.” I laughed.

Maybe it was the hundredth thing or maybe it was the millionth, but his dedication to the protection of the people in his life that he loved was another aspect I loved about him. He was especially protective of the women. One would’ve assumed Lyric was the president’s daughter before she married Keanu.

The only reason Laike slacked up on her security was because she had an in-house guard that was just as ruthless and unhinged as he was. They were one in the same and she’d married him, giving her brother a slight break.
